Land Speed Record With Corvette

On June 27, with driver Jim Mero at the wheel, the Corvette ZR1 managed a Nurburgring record lap time of 7:26.4. After the record lap Jim Mero said that in some sections he felt he could have been faster. Could we see a better lap time in the future?
General Motors says the Corvette ZR1 used for the run was completely standard, except for the communications and safety equipment. They shoed the Corvette ZR1 with production Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires that have been developed especially for this car and have very good wet traction and wear.

The chief engineer for the Corvette ZR1, Tadge Juechter, has spilled all manner of details about the upcoming supercar in the past month, with everything from Nurburgring lap times to possible fuel economy figures getting a mention. Juechter has boasted in the past that the ZR1 “will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack,” including beating Nissan’s official 7m 29s Nurburgring lap time posted by the GT-R last month.
The GM engineer has now revealed the ZR1 will be the most fuel-efficient 600hp car you can buy in the world, although he wasn’t willing to give exact numbers, Edmunds reports. He did however, mention that its fuel economy “will be somewhat less than a Z06,” which according to EPA tests returns 15mpg on in the city and 24mpg on the highway.
Juechter also said production of the ZR1 will start this summer, “and we can produce approximately 2,000 ZR1s per year for the world.” Final pricing will be announced later this month and is expected to be around the $100,000 mark.
